Best Co-Op Games Like It Takes Two
It Takes Two
by Hazelight Studios is one of the best co-op games of the last decade. It garnered great reviews, which came as no surprise considering it was made by the same team as
A Way Out,
another popular and unique co-op experience.
It Takes Two
requires multiplayer and has gamers play as Cody and May, an estranged couple considering divorce. When a magical spell transforms them into dolls, they must use their individual skills to navigate creative platforming levels to escape. Along the way, they attempt to mend their broken relationship.
It Takes Two
hardly ever uses the same mechanic twice, making it an unpredictable and exciting adventure for friends and couples to enjoy together. It’s a pretty unique co-op game, but there are a lot of other amazing cooperative experiences to dive into after completing it that are just as special.

Co-op games like It Takes Two
do not come around often, but there are plenty of titles that should be able to keep a good of friends entertained.

This wacky and puzzle-filled cooperative romp sees players wobbling their way through a wide array of levels. The wonky ragdoll-like physics create a hilarious gameplay loop that sees players attempting to pull levers, move objects, and more all while struggling just to remain upright at times.
Human Fall Flat
has a lot of replayability thanks to its fun (and funny) mayhem-infused gameplay, with costumes to unlock and multiple levels to explore. There are even hidden secrets to be found and some of the puzzles are a blast to solve with friends.

Those looking for something that has the same style and flair as
It Takes Two,
in terms of its colorful settings and imaginative story, but are looking for something with a bit more maturity and lots of crazy guns and spells will definitely want to consider
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
. The newest game from Gearbox is a spin-off from the epic
Borderlands
series, taking players through a
Dungeons & Dragons
-style looter shooter with Tiny Tina, one of the series’ most iconic and hilarious characters.
Players can join each other cooperatively and complete the game from start to finish, going through the story and each comical side
quest
in their entirety. There is a lot of content to explore and players even have a healthy endgame to pursue with ever-changing dungeons called Chaos Chambers. It also supports split-screen local play!
Kirby And The Forgotten Land
Those looking for a fun and wholesome experience that’s just as colorful and endearing as
It Takes Two
will definitely want to go through
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
with a friend or loved one. This
Kirby
adventure is unlike any other, pitting the pink puffball (and a friend in Bandana Waddle Dee) up against a colorful cast of enemies in a 3D-styled adventure similar to
Super Mario Odyssey
.
Players seeking something a bit more relaxing compared to the other franchises on this list should load up
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
, which allows players to hop in by using a second Joycon or Pro Controller.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
is just as polished and charming as any other mainline entry in Nintendo’s franchise. After roughly a decade, Mario and friends finally returned in October 2023 for a new 2D adventure, and
Wonder
serves as a great evolution of this formula. While a great pick for solo runners, the game also supports 4-player co-op, with the participants being able to pick from 12 playable characters such as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, and Light-Blue Yoshi.
Accessibility is a cornerstone of most of Nintendo’s primary franchises, none more so than Mario. Consequently,
Wonder
is designed to be as beginner-friendly as possible, including the incorporation of an invincibility feature that can be assigned to individual characters. As such, parents can introduce their young children to the magic of gaming through
Wonder
, all the while removing the frustration that might come from a mistake.
It Takes Two
and
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
are very different games in the grand scheme of things, with the latter largely disregarding its story. However, they both take players on visually gorgeous adventures filled with memorable characters and locations.

- 6-Player Online Co-Op
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
and
It Takes Two
are widely different co-op experiences, but they both execute what they are trying to achieve extremely well. Tribute Games’ title is a beat ’em up that takes inspiration from the Turtles’ storied history in the genre, particularly during the ’90s. Utilizing a gorgeous pixel art style,
Shredder’s Revenge
pays loving homage to the past without sacrificing modern quality-of-life improvements required to make a modern package deliver more than just a nostalgia trip.
While enjoyable solo,
Shredder’s Revenge
is at its best when played with friends. The game has seven playable characters, each of whom has unique attacks, strengths, and weaknesses. As the stages can get quite challenging, players will need to learn to work together, and they can even execute a few co-op moves.
As fun as this game is,
Shredder’s Revenge
will probably not change the minds of people who do not like beat ’em ups.

was initially intended for Sega System 18, but the arcade game was canceled before completion. Roughly 30 years later, the platformer was revived for modern consoles, saving a part of gaming history that seemed to be lost to time.
Clockwork Aquario
consists of five stages, each of which has artistic visuals and colorful backdrops. Players can pick from three protagonists, and while they control the same, co-op does open a few possibilities like an option to fling a character toward enemies.

This third-person shooter really brought gamers together when it first dropped on the
Xbox 360. Army Of Two
has everything that a staple
couch co-op shooter
should have – freedom for both players to experience the game differently and be really fun.
Army of Two
makes both parties feel important.
Playing rock, paper, and scissors while deciding who gets the stealth kill always adds a new level of fun because both players would still engage. To run into an area with a player and their friend would be unrivaled because of the chaos of gunfire and the screaming while shouting at players would get any player’s blood pumped. Generally,
Army of Two
did what many
co-op games
couldn’t, and that is making both players feel like they are the heroes in their own sense.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
As its 10-year anniversary slowly approaches,
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
might soon be described as a “classic,” a label the game fully warrants. One of the best titles on the Wii U, Retro Studios’ project was eventually ported to the Switch, where it immediately established itself as one of that console’s premium titles. In the grand scheme of things,
Tropical Freeze
is a relatively safe entry in the
Donkey Kong Country
canon as the game does not deviate too significantly from the beaten path; that said, the platformer is about as polished of an experience as they come.
The AAA Nintendo game can be played single-player without any issue, and most people will undoubtedly have a blast going through the campaign’s fantastic stages on their own. That said, co-op is an option and a pretty good one at that. While Donkey Kong is the primary playable character, players do eventually unlock Dixie, Diddy, and Cranky as support figures. All three of them have unique abilities that come in handy when traversing levels, and co-op allows a player to take charge of one of these characters. Their main function is to aid Donkey Kong, but they should still be kept busy throughout most of the game.

KeyWe

Although not story-driven like
It Takes Two
, both games emphasize communication. In
KeyWe

As a puzzle-platformer, the game builds its challenges around this gravity mechanic, and it does some intriguing things with the concept.
It Takes Two
is purely a co-op experience, and the same can be said for
Ibb & Obb
. While the latter does not have much of a story, it does deliver addictive and rewarding gameplay that necessitates communication between the participants. In the right setting, this game is a fun way to spend a few hours.

Gears 5

Co-Op is available for the Campaign, Exhaust, and Horde modes; the first two are limited to three players, but Horde allows up to five.
Also since it’s part of a franchise and all the
Gears of War
games have co-op, players can spend a weekend with a friend going through the whole series up to
Gears 5.
While doing that, players can certainly raise the stakes by putting the game on a higher difficulty making gameplay even more stressful. Thus forcing the player to communicate more, which gives them a sense of accomplishment.

Overcooked! 2
is a
fast-paced co-op game
developed by Team17 and Ghost Town Games. As the title implies, it is the sequel to
Overcooked.
Both are essentially the same game and have similar mechanics, but the sequel is just slightly superior. In
Overcooked! 2,
players must join together and save the Onion Kingdom by successfully running restaurants set in wild, imaginative kitchens. It also has a ton of DLCs, so there’s a lot of content to explore with this one.
The levels are completely unpredictable; sometimes players will be isolated to one side of the kitchen and have to pass ingredients back and forth, and in others, the kitchen may be constantly shifting. Delegation is extremely important in
Overcooked! 2,
and while it can technically be played with only one or two players, it’s much harder to get the scores required to get to the next level without the full four players. That said,
Overcooked!
is commonly cited as one of those games that can ruin friendships, so proceed with caution.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
is often cited as a great game to play with a significant other on Valentine’s Day, but there’s not really any romance going on. Instead, the premise of the game is simply to eliminate Anti-Love, which everyone should be in favor of.
If players prefer to play on their own, they can and will partner with an AI space pet to help them. But similar to
Overcooked,
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
is truly meant to be a cooperative gameplay experience. Each player has a job or protects a side of the spaceship, and having to do it all alone is much more difficult. Unfortunately,
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

Nobody Saves the World
is a wonderful action RPG, one of the best of 2022. DrinkBox’s project is an easy recommendation for anyone interested in the genre, regardless of whether they intend to play solo or with a partner. As Nobody, players go on an epic adventure that sees them meet a wide array of colorful NPCs, some of which need to be taken down. The game’s selling point is its transformable protagonist as Nobody can take on an impressive range of forms that come with unique skills.
The co-op mode throws another Nobody into the mix, and their inclusion improves the already awesome combat system. Otherwise, multiplayer does not impact the game in any significant way, and both parties will need to share the screen at all times. Still, co-op is a great addition to

A Way Out

A Way Out,
gamers play as either Leo or Vincent, two criminals trying to break out of prison. Just like

instantly attracted praise for being a charming addition to the 3D platformer genre. These types of games might have been a dime-a-dozen in the early 2000s, but modern releases that gain mainstream attention are few and far in-between, especially ones that are not associated with established brands like
Super Mario

.
A Hat in Time
defied all odds, showing that these projects can find an audience even when they are not backed by Nintendo.
At launch, Gears for Breakfast’s game did not include local co-op, but this was added later down the line. Presented in split-screen, two players can work through the campaign together, with each person receiving the same abilities, moveset, and responsibilities. As such, both parties are on equal footing, which makes for a balanced experience.
A Hat in Time

While neither of these releases are masterpieces nor do they compare to the scale of the recent mainline entries, they are both solid projects that blend action, platforming, and puzzles well; more importantly, they support co-op, a feature not generally associated with
Tomb Raider
.
Temple of Osiris
‘ availability on modern consoles makes it the more accessible pick, however, its predecessor is arguably the superior experience.
Guardian of Light
does a good job of emphasizing coordination, with certain moves requiring Lara and Totec to directly work together. The game can be played solo rather effortlessly, but co-op improves the campaign.

Much of the charm in
It Takes Two
stems from its beautifully designed worlds and story-book-like visuals. Not only is the game a great way for two people to connect from an emotional level, but the lightheartedness of it all both visually and from a gameplay perspective makes it a wholesome experience that should be experienced by everyone. Thankfully, there are even more games out there that feature similar aesthetics.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
oozes the same doll-like visuals as It Takes Two and gives players even more imaginative worlds to platform their way through. The best part about the release is that it has received some multiplayer-friendly updates after its release. Crossplay and Online Cooperative modes will give players a chance to connect from all over the world (and up to four players can play at one time). It also features a well-made local Co-Op mode for those looking for a more personal couch-based experience.

Kitaria Fables
is, first and foremost, a single-player RPG, and a good one at that. Cast as an adorable cat who can farm, swap classes, and fight monsters, players can look forward to a surprisingly robust adventure that focuses heavily on grinding materials. Aesthetically,
Kitaria Fables
oozes personality through its vibrant colors, character designs, and varied (albeit standard) environments. While the minute-to-minute combat is relatively simple, the game opts against a fixed class system, encouraging players to change and upgrade weapons depending on their preferred playstyle.
Kitaria Fables
supports local co-op, and while this feature is not a game-changer, it is a nice addition to have. Essentially, two cats go on the same adventure, sharing the screen along with the loot. Co-op does not alter the campaign in any notable way, but it does encourage players to coordinate their builds.

- 4-Player Online Co-Op
ARPGs are a ton of fun, especially for cooperative play, but they can be difficult to get into for players who aren’t familiar with the genre. Titles like
Diablo 3
and
Path of Exile
were built with fans of ARPGs in mind, which can present a steep learning curve for those outside the know. Things like “min-maxing,” and trying to understand what loot works best with which skills can be overwhelming.
Minecraft Dungeons
offers an underrated ARPG experience while also crafting a user-friendly space for people who are new to the genre. It’s a blast to play solo but it’s a lot more fun and rewarding when played with friends.

Fans of
It Takes Two
will find a lot of familiarity and comfort in the epic adventure of
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
, considering it is crafted by the same developer. Like
It Takes Two
, the adventure is told through the perspective of two characters and features a heartwarming storyline that players are sure to enjoy.
The original release was meant to be a solo affair, even though it includes two characters. This is because the control scheme was built around the idea that one player would be controlling both brothers. That said, when
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
was released for the Nintendo Switch, Starbreeze Studios added a fleshed-out multiplayer control scheme that allows players to enjoy the adventure cooperatively. If someone is looking for
games like It
Takes Two
, this should be their first stop.

Those who loved
It Takes Two
but are craving an experience where they can flex their brain muscles a bit harder will adore the challenge and ingenuity presented in
Portal 2
. The sequel to the hit release,
Portal
, gives a truly unique cooperative experience like no other, where two players are forced to operate the varying sides of a portal gun. Gamers familiar with the franchise will once again find themselves trapped in a series of tests, where they must use portals to escape each level, all while dodging hazards, turrets, and other unique obstacles.
Portal 2
also features an engrossing single-player experience that’s completely separate from the Cooperative playthrough. This means that those who have already beaten the title alone can find an entirely new storyline to play through with a friend, and vice versa.
